Sepsis Introduction

The Center for Transforming Healthcare focuses on important quality and safety initiatives. Sepsis, the body’s life-threatening inflammatory response to an infection, is the leading cause of death in hospitalized patients. It claims 220,000 American lives each year and has a mortality rate estimated between 25 and 50 percent. In addition to these sobering statistics, sepsis is also the most expensive disease to treat in the hospital, costing approximately $17 billion dollars each year.
